Oommen Chandy was born on October 31, 1943, in Kumarakom, Kerala. His parents named him after Baby and K. O. Chandy of the Karottu Vallakkalil house. He grew up in a big Nasrani Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian family. Chandy went to St. George High School in Puthuppally and then to CMS College in Kottayam. After that, he studied Economics at St. Berchmans College, Changanassery. Later on, he decided to add LL.B to his list of degrees from Government Law College in Ernakulam.

Oommen Chandy’s journey into politics began with the Kerala Students Union (KSU), which is part of the Indian National Congress (INC). He led the KSU from 1967 to 1969 and later became the state president of the Youth Congress in 1970.

Chandy first entered the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970, representing the Puthuppally constituency. He continued to represent this constituency for more than fifty years, making him the longest-serving member in Kerala’s legislative history. He was re-elected in 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.

During his career, Chandy held several important roles in the Kerala government, including Minister for Labour and Rehabilitation, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Power. His leadership and organizational abilities were widely respected.
