Early Life and Education

Sheila Jackson Lee was born on January 12, 1950, in Queens, New York. She went to Jamaica High School. She got a scholarship for Black students and went to New York University. Then, she moved to Yale University and graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1972. After that, she went to the University of Virginia School of Law and got her law degree in 1975.

Early Career

Before she got into politics, Sheila Jackson Lee worked as a city judge in Houston from 1987 to 1990. In 1989, she was elected to the Houston City Council and served there until 1994.

Congressional Career

In 1994, Jackson Lee ran against and beat Craig Washington, who had been a U.S. Representative for four terms, in the Democratic primary with 63% of the votes. She started working as the U.S. representative for Texas’s 18th congressional district in 1995 and kept the job until she passed away in 2024.

While in office, Jackson Lee was known for her progressive ideas and important work. She introduced many important bills, like the Essential Transportation Worker Identification Credential Assessment Act in 2013 and the Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act in 2021. She also helped make Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021.

Jackson Lee was part of several important Congressional Committees, including the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget Committees. She was the first woman to be the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations. She was also a past Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Maritime and Border Security.

During her career, Jackson Lee won many awards. ‘Congressional Quarterly’ listed her as one of the 50 best Members of Congress. In 2020, she received the Hilal-i-Pakistan (Crescent of Pakistan) Award, which is the highest civilian award in Pakistan, for her work benefiting the country.

Jackson Lee had some health problems, including breast cancer, but she was told she was free of cancer in 2012. In June 2024, she shared that she had pancreatic cancer and was getting treatment. Sheila Jackson Lee died on July 19, 2024, when she was 74 years old.
