Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Biography
Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, often called the Father of Indian Chemistry, was born on August 2, 1861, in a village called Raruli-Katipara in Bengal (now in Khulna, Bangladesh). He had four brothers and two sisters, making him one of seven children. His great-grandfather, Maniklal, worked for the British East India Company and became very wealthy.
After getting better from an illness, Ray moved to Calcutta in 1876 and went to Albert School, started by Brahmo reformer Keshub Chandra Sen. He did well in school, passing the Entrance Exam with a First Division, and then joined the Metropolitan Institution (later Vidyasagar College) as an FA student. In 1882, he got a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and later his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1887.

Academic and Professional Career
When Ray came back to India in 1888, he became an assistant professor of Chemistry at Presidency College in Calcutta in 1889. He taught there until 1917 and then worked at Calcutta University until he retired in 1936. Ray was a very active researcher, publishing about 150 research papers. His most important discovery was mercurous nitrite in 1896, which was a big deal in inorganic chemistry. He also wrote a book called “A History of Hindu Chemistry from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the Sixteenth Century” in 1902.
Contributions to Industry and Education
In 1901, Ray started Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, the first pharmaceutical company in India, with just 700 INR. He also founded other businesses like Bengal Enamel Works, National Tannery Works, and Calcutta Pottery Works, helping to industrialize Bengal.
Ray played a key role in starting the Bengal Technical Institute (now Jadavpur University) and the University of Dacca (now the University of Dhaka). He was also involved in the Swadeshi movement, encouraging people to use local products and support self-reliance.
Awards and Honors
Ray received many awards in his lifetime. In 1912, he was given the title of Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE), and in 1919, he was knighted. In 1920, he was chosen as the General President of the Indian Science Congress. The Royal Society of Chemistry put up the first-ever Chemical Landmark Plaque outside Europe to honor his life and work.
Legacy
Ray’s legacy is not just in science. He was a strong nationalist and a generous person, giving money to various organizations like the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj and the Brahmo Girls’ School. He loved music and literature too.
The Indian Chemical Society, which Ray started, gives the Acharya P.C. Ray Memorial Award every year to honor great work in chemistry. Ray wrote his life story in two books called “Life and Experiences of a Bengali Chemist,” published in 1932 and 1935.
Death
Ray died on June 16, 1944, in Calcutta, now called Kolkata, West Bengal, India, at the age of 82.
