Atishi Marlena Singh, often called Atishi, was born on June 8, 1981, in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, were both professors. She comes from a mixed Rajput and Punjabi family background.
Atishi went to school at Springdales School in New Delhi. She did very well in her studies and graduated with top marks in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 2001. After that, she went to Oxford University in the UK on a special scholarship and got her master’s degree in History in 2003. She also got a second master’s degree in Educational Research as a Rhodes Scholar in 2005.
Early Career and Politics
Before starting her political career, Atishi worked in the social development field in Madhya Pradesh and also taught History and English at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh. She joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013 and helped the party make important policies. Her work with the party laid the foundation for her political journey.
Political Career and Achievements
In 2019, Atishi ran for the Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi but lost to Gautam Gambhir from the BJP. However, in 2020, she won the Kalkaji seat in the Delhi Assembly election, beating her opponent by more than 11,000 votes. Since then, she has been a member of the Delhi Assembly, representing Kalkaji.
Atishi has held several important roles in the Delhi government, including being the Minister for Education, Public Works, Tourism, Finance, Power, and more. She is best known for improving education in Delhi by upgrading schools, training teachers, and making sure students get free textbooks and uniforms.
Becoming Chief Minister
On September 17, 2024, Atishi became the Chief Minister of Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down. At 43, she became the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi and the third woman to hold this position after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.
