Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, often called the Father of Indian Chemistry, was born on August 2, 1861, in a village called Raruli-Katipara in Bengal (now in Khulna, Bangladesh). He had four brothers and two sisters, making him one of seven children. His great-grandfather, Maniklal, worked for the British East India Company and became very wealthy.

After getting better from an illness, Ray moved to Calcutta in 1876 and went to Albert School, started by Brahmo reformer Keshub Chandra Sen. He did well in school, passing the Entrance Exam with a First Division, and then joined the Metropolitan Institution (later Vidyasagar College) as an FA student. In 1882, he got a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and later his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1887.

When Ray came back to India in 1888, he became an assistant professor of Chemistry at Presidency College in Calcutta in 1889. He taught there until 1917 and then worked at Calcutta University until he retired in 1936. Ray was a very active researcher, publishing about 150 research papers. His most important discovery was mercurous nitrite in 1896, which was a big deal in inorganic chemistry. He also wrote a book called “A History of Hindu Chemistry from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the Sixteenth Century” in 1902.
