Sunita Williams Biography
Sunita Lyn Williams, born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio, is an American astronaut and Navy officer with Indian and Slovenian roots. She grew up in Needham, Massachusetts, and finished high school there in 1983. Sunita went to the United States Naval Academy and got her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science in 1987. She later earned a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.
Sunita joined the United States Navy as an ensign in May 1987. She served in Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8 in Norfolk, Virginia. She led a team during the Hurricane Andrew Relief Operations in Miami, Florida, aboard the USS Sylvania. Sunita was chosen for the Naval Test Pilot School and graduated in 1993. She flew many different types of aircraft and held various leadership roles, logging more than 3,000 flight hours in over 30 aircraft.
NASA Career
Sunita started her astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center in August 1998. She was selected as a NASA astronaut in the same year and has become one of NASA’s most experienced flight engineers.
Space Missions
Expedition 14/15
Sunita went to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 9, 2006, aboard Space Shuttle Discovery as part of Expedition 14. During this mission, she set a world record for women with four spacewalks totaling 29 hours and 17 minutes. She also became the first person to run a marathon in space on April 16, 2007.
Expedition 32/33
On July 15, 2012, Sunita launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as part of Expedition 32/33. She spent four months on the ISS, doing research and performing three spacewalks. On September 17, 2012, she became the commander of the ISS, the second woman to do so.
Boeing Starliner Mission
In 2015, NASA chose Sunita as one of the first astronauts for U.S. Commercial spaceflights. In 2022, she was selected for the first crewed test flight of the Boeing Starliner to the ISS, which launched on June 5, 2024. She was the pilot alongside commander Barry Wilmore. As of August 17, 2024, she is still on the ISS due to technical problems with the Starliner’s return module.
Records and Achievements
Sunita holds records for the most spacewalks by a woman (seven) and the most time spent on spacewalks by a woman (50 hours, 40 minutes). She has spent a total of 322 days in space, making her the second all-time among female astronauts. In 2012, she also became the first person to complete a triathlon in space.

Sunita is married to Michael J. Williams, a federal marshal in Texas. Both started their careers flying helicopters. She practices Hinduism and has a strong connection to India, having visited her ancestral village in Gujarat. She also carried the Bhagavad Gita with her on her space missions.
Honors and Awards
Sunita has received many honors, including the Navy Commendation Medal, NASA Spaceflight Medal, and the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. In June 2017, Needham Public Schools named a new elementary school after her.
