Louis Braille biography

Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809, in Coupvray, France, about twenty miles from Paris. When he was three years old, he had an accident in his father’s shop that led to an infection, causing him to become completely blind. Despite this, Braille was very smart and determined.

In 1819, Braille started attending the National Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, the world’s first school for blind children. There, he met Charles Barbier, a retired artillery officer who had invented a system called “night writing” for soldiers to communicate silently at night. This system used 12 raised dots to represent sounds.

Creating the Braille System

Inspired by Barbier’s system, Braille began creating his own code when he was 13 years old. By 1824, he had improved Barbier’s 12-dot system into a simpler six-dot code that could be read with one finger. This new system allowed for 64 different combinations, representing letters, punctuation, and even musical notes.

In 1829, Braille released his method in a book called “Method of Writing Words, Music, and Plain Songs Using Dots for the Blind.” This book started a new way for blind people to read and write.

Louis Braille became a teacher at the National Institute for Blind Youth, where he improved and shared his reading system for the blind. Even though he made important contributions, he was not officially recognized during his life. He got sick with tuberculosis and had to stop teaching when he was 40 years old. He died on January 6, 1852, in Paris.

Two years after he died, the Institute started using his system, and it quickly spread in French-speaking areas. Today, Braille’s system is used all over the world, with about 85 different types of braille. His work continues to help millions of blind and visually impaired people read, write, and communicate.
