Sir M. Visvesvaraya Biography
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, often called MV, was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village, Karnataka, India. He came from a poor Brahmin family and was known for being disciplined and having strong values from a young age.
Visvesvaraya finished his early schooling in Chikkaballapur and later went to Bangalore for further studies. He got a B.A. degree from Central College, Bangalore, and later won a scholarship to study civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.
Early Career
In 1883, Visvesvaraya started his career as an Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department (PWD) of Bombay. His early work included improving irrigation in the Deccan canals and fixing water supply problems in Sukkur, on the banks of the Indus River. He also invented automatic floodgates, which were first used at the Khadakwasla reservoir near Pune in 1903.
Work as Dewan of Mysore
In 1912, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV appointed Visvesvaraya as the Dewan (Prime Minister) of Mysore, a role he served until 1918. During this time, he helped start many industries and educational institutes, like the Mysore Soap Factory, Bangalore Polytechnic, Bangalore Agricultural University, and the State Bank of Mysore. He also helped set up the University of Mysore in 1916.
Engineering Achievements
One of Visvesvaraya’s biggest engineering projects was designing the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore. This dam helped turn dry land into fertile farms. He also created a flood protection system for Hyderabad and improved the irrigation system in the Deccan Plateau.
Later Life and Legacy
After retiring in 1918, Visvesvaraya continued to work on different projects, including the Mysore Iron and Steel Works. In 1943, he helped establish the Sir Jayachamarajendra Occupational Institute in Bangalore. In 1955, he was honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for his contributions to engineering and public service.
Visvesvaraya’s birthday, September 15, is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Many institutions and places are named after him, such as Visvesvaraya Technological University and the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum.
Personal Life
Visvesvaraya was known for being hardworking, punctual, and focused on his work. He was a strict vegetarian, did not smoke or drink alcohol. He passed away on April 14, 1962, leaving behind a great legacy of innovation and public service.
Honors
In 1915, Visvesvaraya was knighted by the British government for his contributions to society. In 1960, the Indian government issued a postage stamp in his honor to mark his 100th birthday. In 2018, on his 157th birthday, Google celebrated him with a Google Doodle.
