Gregorio Zara Biography

Gregorio Ynciong Zara was born on March 8, 1902, in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines. He was a very good student and finished as the top student at Batangas High School in 1922. Because of his good grades, he got a scholarship to study in other countries.

Zara went to the United States and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1926. He then studied at the University of Michigan and got a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, finishing with the highest honors in 1927.

Zara continued his studies in France at Sorbonne University in Paris. He earned a Doctor of Science degree in Physics in 1930, graduating with the highest distinction.

When Zara went back to the Philippines, he got a job as a Technical Assistant on aviation issues in the office of the Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Communications (DPWC). He was the director of the aeronautical board for 21 years, confirmed by the Congress of the Philippines until 1952.

Zara is famous for inventing the first two-way videophone in 1955, which was an early device for video calls. This invention, called a ‘photo phone signal separator network,’ was a big technological step, but it was too expensive and impractical to sell at that time.

These included an airplane engine that ran on alcohol, which was tested successfully in 1954, a solar-powered water heater, a machine for cutting propellers, and the discovery of the Zara Effect, a physical law about electrical resistance. He also worked a lot with solar energy, making solar stoves, batteries, and water heaters in the 1960s.

During his life, Zara won many awards, like the Presidential Diploma of Merit in 1959, the Distinguished Service Medal in 1959, the Presidential Gold Award and Diploma of Honor for Science and Research in 1966, and the Cultural Heritage Award for Science Education and Aero Engineering in 1996. The year he died, he received the Order of National Scientist from President Ferdinand Marcos, which is the highest award for Filipino scientists.
