Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, widely known as Prakasam Pantulu, was born on August 23, 1872, in a small village called Vinodarayunipalem, located in what is now the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to a Telugu-speaking Niyogi Brahmin family, with his parents being Subbamma and Gopalakrishnayya. His father worked as a village headman and later took a job in the Venkatagiri estate, where he earned a modest income.

On October 1, 1953, when the state of Andhra was formed, Prakasam was chosen as the first Chief Minister of the new state. His government focused on projects for irrigation, education, and healthcare to help the poor and underprivileged. He was also a key figure in the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam project.
Legacy and Death
Prakasam’s life was defined by his firm commitment to his principles and his significant contributions to India’s independence and the growth of Andhra Pradesh. He passed away on May 20, 1957, in Hyderabad after suffering from sunstroke during a tour. Andhra Pradesh honors his memory by observing “Prakasam Day” on his birthday.
