APJ Abdul Kalam biography
Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, known as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He was part of a Tamil Muslim family and had four brothers and one sister. Even though his family wasn’t rich, Kalam went to Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram for his early education. He finished his Physics degree from Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, in 1954. After that, he studied aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology and graduated in 1960.
Early Career
After finishing school, Kalam started working at the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist in 1960. His first project was to create a small hovercraft. In 1969, he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he led the project for India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). This project was a big step for India’s space exploration.
Missile Development
Kalam was very important in developing India’s ballistic missiles and launch vehicle technology. Because of his work, people called him the “Missile Man of India.” He helped create the Prithvi and Agni missiles, which greatly improved India’s defense.
Nuclear Program
