Sitaram Yechuri Biography
Sitaram Yechury was born on August 12, 1952, in Madras (now called Chennai), Tamil Nadu, in a Brahmin family that spoke Telugu. He went to school at All Saints High School in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. He studied Economics for his Bachelor’s degree at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, where he graduated with top marks. Later, he did his Master’s in Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1975.
Political Career
Yechury started his political career as a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), which is linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) in 1974 while studying at JNU. He was the first president of SFI who was not from West Bengal or Kerala. In October 1977, he led a large student protest demanding the resignation of Indira Gandhi as the chancellor of JNU.
Growth in CPI(M)
In 1975, Yechury joined the CPI(M) and quickly moved up in the party. He became part of the CPI(M) Central Committee in 1984 and joined the Politburo in 1992. In 2015, he was elected as the General Secretary of CPI(M), a position he held until he passed away in 2024.
Parliamentary Career
Yechury represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament) from 2005 to 2017.
